Gaming the System 1989

Documentary | UK, Czechia, Slovakia, Serbia, Croatia | Development

Gaming the System 1989 is a geopolitical look at the 80s Czechoslovak video game scene. It follows the route of microcomputer inventions from the demoscene and commercial market in the UK, through smuggling and cracking in former Yugoslavia, finding its way ultimately to hobbyist circles in Czechoslovakia. Vignettes of local computer experiments and personal reinterpretations of foreign influences show us the liberating nature of the medium, at the time still novel and fresh. The unique societal and technological bubble culminates around the Velvet Revolution, elevated to a platform for political activism, and ends with the fall of the Iron Curtain and influx of the global market with advanced technologies. Import Games: Spectrum leaves room for reflection on what this movement meant in the bigger picture, for the future of the local gaming industry, as well as the dialog between region-specific sensibilities and the established foreign market.
